Journalist wins international recognition for book on city’s Irish diaspora

A journalist’s book on a city’s Irish diaspora has won international recognition.

HTFP reported in January how Yorkshire-based news and feature writer Sheron Boyle, pictured, had been commissioned to write a book celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Leeds Irish Centre.

The book, which also examines how the Irish have shaped the city over the past 200 years, has now almost sold out after being release.

Sheron featured stories from Leeds celebrities including DJ Chris Moyles and sports presenter Gabby Logan in the book.

She said: “The book just about sold out, we have had publicity in America and even the Cayman Islands, plus a lot of media in Ireland.

“My dad, Michael, came to England as a young man and my own story is the stories of the Yorkshire Irish diaspora who have gone before us.

“The book has been a labour of love but even I was surprised by the millions of pounds this one single centre has raised for charities over the years, most of which has gone to regional organisations.

“Stories of the world-famous names – everyone from Val Doonican to Oasis – who have trod the stage were fascinating to hear about but I loved telling the centre members’ own stories.”
