ITV News editor calls for more journalists to be based away from London

Rachel CorpThe editor of ITV News has called for more journalists to be based outside of London after sharing fears about the impact of British people not getting “good regional journalism” in future.

Rachel Corp has highlighted the importance of regional news in a keynote discussion held as part of this year’s Society of Editors Virtual Conference.

Rachel, pictured, said it was a “good thing” that national broadcasters were basing more reporters away from the capital in a session held this lunchtime with SoE executive director Ian Murray.

During the discussion, Ian quizzed her on whether she could “see any serious clouds on the horizon” or “things that might keep you awake at night” in relation to media and the journalism industry.

In response, Rachel said: “Regional news is incredibly important and more so now than ever, particularly post-Brexit and everything else.

“This country has a whole range of opinions, experiences and lifestyles, and we need to make sure we are understanding people and are being relevant to them.

“We’re very lucky at ITV with our regional network and I am aware of how tough it is in other sectors of the industry – in regional newspapers, radio and broadcasting.

“That worries me. We will all lose if we’re not getting good regional journalism.”

Rachel went on to note national broadcasters had been moving more journalists out of London recently.

She added: “If we can see more people based out of London then I think that’s going to be a good thing.”
