Daily recalls Blitz on patch in special wartime-style edition

A regional daily has marked 80 years since the blitz of its patch with a wartime-style special edition.

Sheffield daily The Star has remembered the Sheffield Blitz, in which German air raids killed more than 400 people over the nights of 12 December and 15 December 1940.

The whole of today’s unique edition of The Star, pictured below, is styled as it was in the Second World War and contains stories from the tragedy, as well as the memories of survivors who are still alive today.

It also includes exclusive photos taken by Star photographers at the time.

Star editor Nancy Fielder said: “The stories in this very special edition of The Star include memories which could not be published within the restrictions of war.

“I have shed tears hearing of those days, knowing that the memories are just as sharp in 2020 and the pain is no less than it was in 1940 for those who bore witness.

“We remember but we also want to make sure the children of this city understand those times, the sacrifices made and the wonderful community spirit which kept Sheffield going in 1940 through the blitz as it does today in 2020 though the pandemic.

“I thank everyone who has contributed to this edition and I promise that we will do all we can to keep candles burning bright in memory of those lost during the Blitz.”
