Up to 20 sites affected as BBC confirms further district office closures

BBC newsUp to 20 district offices will now be closed by the BBC, it has been confirmed.

HTFP reported on Tuesday that the corporation had announced it was closing its district offices in Blackpool and Lancaster as part of cost-cutting measures.

The BBC has since itself reported that bases in Scarborough, Canterbury, Grimsby and Portsmouth will also be among those set to shut, although the corporation has yet to publish a full list.

The affected offices are described as “very small, often unstaffed sites” offices which are mainly used to file stories or conduct interviews remotely.   The corporation’s 39 local radio stations will be unaffacted.

The BBC said in a statement that the rise of video apps has meant that use of the offices is “increasingly unnecessary”, and that no jobs will be lost as a result of the closures.

HTFP has asked the corporation for the full list of the 20 sites affected.

A BBC spokesman previously told HTFP: “We have 39 broadcast bases across England. These sites are supported by a number of very small, often unstaffed sites in nearby locations.

“New technology means these smaller sites are no longer needed. Closing them will save money at a time when the BBC faces significant financial pressures.

“There will be no job losses and our services in those areas will not change.”
