Weekly makes Christmas Eve bid to reach out to patch’s lonely

A weekly newspaper has launched a Christmas Eve push to help those suffering from loneliness during the festive season.

The Perthshire Advertiser splashed this morning on a call reminding those going through a difficult time that they are not alone.

The Advertiser is also encouraging readers to reach out to someone they know may be struggling.

In a front page comment, editor Douglas Dickie said Christmas could be a “nightmare” for some people.

He wrote: “They could be alone, isolated and estranged from the ones they love. Or perhaps they are hiding their problems while their families are around them, enjoying themselves, oblivious to their loved one’s mental torment.

“That is why the PA has teamed up with local support groups to remind anyone going through a difficult time that they are not alone.

“And we also want to encourage residents who think someone might be struggling to reach out to them. Everyone will know someone suffering from mental health issues this festive season – you might just not realise it yet.

“If you think someone might be alone, or suffering while all around them are celebrating, your support could make all the difference A simple text or a phone call could be the great gift you give this Christmas.”
