Former newspaper fashion editor dies aged 55 after cancer fight

Beatrice ColinA former newspaper fashion editor and arts reviewer has died aged 55 after fighting cancer.

Beatrice Colin, left, wrote book reviews for Glasgow-based daily The Herald in the 1990s, and went on to edit Scotland on Sunday’s fashion pages.

Beatrice had previously been a singer, and had her own clothing design business, before entering journalism in 1990.

She later spent time in New York, where she wrote fiction and radio drama, before returning to Glasgow in 2003 after her marriage to Ewan Morrison ended.

In 2012 she was appointed as lecturer in creative writing at the University of Strathclyde and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2016.

In the same year, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but, according to an obituary for The Herald by friend Gaynor MacFarlane, “lived fully and fearlessly for two-and-a-half years with the disease”.

Gaynor added: “She was a constant champion of good writing, as well as a clear and direct critic of what she considered less than good.

“She was patient, enthusiastic and generous to her students and spurred them on to achieve their best work.”

Beatrice, who died on 6 February, is survived by her husband Paul Harkin, her children Theo and Frances, her step-son, Oscar, and by her mother, sister and brother.
