A 116-year-old copy of a regional daily was unearthed during an excavation of three time capsules.

The 1903 edition of Wolverhampton daily the Express & Star was removed from a capsule found within the walls of the city’s West Park rehabilitation Hospital.

Two other capsules, buried in 1982 and 1999 respectively, were also dug up and contained copies of the newspaper from those years too.

Coins, tea bags, photographs and cassette tapes were among the items also found with papers.

The 1903 and 1982 capsules had not been opened since 1999, when the last one was buried.

Retired building manager Russ Handy, who worked at the hospital for 25 years, bricked up the wall that covered the capsules in 1999.

He told the E&S: “It doesn’t seem two minutes since the last event.

“I met my wife while working at West Park and she witnessed the placing of the 1982 capsule. I’m sure the items will bring back memories for both of us.”

A 2019 capsule has now been buried along with the others.
