Young people take over regional daily for special edition

Young people took over a regional daily for the day as the newspaper dedicated an edition to looking at issues affecting them.

The Eastern Daily Press ran the special with the help of guest editors from the Mancroft Advice Project, a Norwich-based organisation which offers support to young people.

The EDP has run two previous ‘takeover editions’, which has seen the paper focus on mental health and women’s issues.

Yesterday’s young people special featured 20 pages of coverage, as well as special Facebook Live and web video events.

In a message to readers, editor David Powles said: “Welcome to our third ‘takeover’ edition of the Eastern Daily Press. We decided to trial this approach as a way of delving into a subject to an extent that might not normally be possible. I’m pleased to say the feedback to them so far has been overwhelmingly positive and I’m sure this edition will be no different.

“By choosing mental health and issues impacting women as our previous two subjects we were also making a statement. We were saying these are two subjects that we believe are worthy of your time and focus. I believe it’s our job as a newspaper to challenge our readers every now and then and maybe delve into something they perhaps normally wouldn’t and that’s what we want these editions to do.

“Today is no different. Today, we’re focusing on a vital subject and asking the question ‘What’s It Like to be a young person in Norfolk and Suffolk in 2018?’ To help us do this we have enlisted the help of our guest editors for the day, some brilliantly talented and enthusiastic youngsters from the Mancroft Advice Project (MAP), to not only give their opinions, but ensure the writers they have commissioned are on track with what they write.

“More than 10,000 young people replied to a survey asking what are their key issues. That is a huge response and it is crucial that our decision makers act on the results.”

    This is a great initiative which reduced the average age of the reporting team by a good six months.

    @Norfolk ‘n Good
    Brilliant! Seriously, though, this was a good idea from Dave Powles, but I look forward to when the EDP does an issue focusing on issues affecting the elderly – you know, the core newspaper readership. I think there will be a lot of leaning on a former letters editor who now helps with a charity for the elderly, or perhaps a few grandparents will be called in as there are precious few over-40 people left now.
