The ‘best’ news conference venue? Daily staff head to beach for morning meeting

Today’s warm weather will have provided plenty of stories for regional journalists – but one newspaper went a step further and held its editorial conference by the sea.

Staff at Brighton daily The Argus headed down to the beach this morning to sort out their news list for the day, broadcasting the meeting live on the paper’s official Facebook channel.

The Argus has been based a pebble’s throw from Brighton Beach since relocating to Dolphin House, in Brighton city centre, in 2016.

Staff had previously been based at Hollingbury, more than six miles from the coast.

Newsquest South London and Sussex group managing editor Andy Parkes told HTFP: “We’re really lucky because the beach and the pier are only a few feet from the office, literally a minute walk.

“The sun’s shining so conference on the beach seemed like a great idea. There was even a pebble lottery to decide who would Facebook live the event. New recruit Hayley Pearce drew the pebble marked with an ‘F’.

“She then went off to interview two intrepid souls heading into the sea. In total, 20 minutes on the beach achieved an excellent conference, a video for the website and a good showing on Facebook – now to mention a few jealous tweets from offices not at the seaside.

“If we hadn’t already won, I’d hold a competition for the best place to hold conference? I wonder where we’ll go next.

“Holding conference outside the office was a breath of fresh air – there can’t be a newspaper office anywhere better than here.”

    Permission to shout loudly?

    Aargh.

Now Baldrick, where are those two pencils?

Good grief, the level of silliness has just been ratcheted up to incredible.

I also felt I was a positive soul in the newsroom, but this industry leaves me feeling like Victor Meldrew. Sod the party tricks, get the work done, sell papers because people want to read stories – not clickbait – and hey presto.

Obviously, we don’t need all these reporters if they have time to go and sit on the beach and get a world exclusive on two people swimming.

    My head hurts.

    More tablets, nurse!

Worse still, this website regards the saga as being worthy of a news story!

Lighten up folks. Bit of fun in a dreary journalism world. Anyone working for Newsquest deserves a bit of beach therapy. Just don’t do a Reggie Perrin, ed.
