The Press and Journal was named Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year at last night’s newsawards with judges praising its ‘stunning print quality.’

The Aberdeen-based title was also lauded for its “exemplary news service, the neat design and eye-catching pages,” at the event, which aims to recognise excellence in newspaper production as well as content.

For the second year running, the Weekly Newspaper of the Year prize went to the Cambridge Independent, which was applauded for its “innovative format and fantastic content.”

Highly commended in the Newspaper of the Year categories were the Eastern Daily Press (dailies) and New Milton Advertiser & Lymington Times (weeklies.)

Another regional group, Trinity Mirror-owned Devon & Conrwall Media, lifted the Brand Partnership of the Year Award with its ‘Cool Dogs’ marketing campaign in conjunction with Carrs Volkswagen.

Judges described it as “a lovely idea, that was bit special and had something a little bit cheeky about it.”

The Trinity Mirror Data Unit, which supplies pages for regional and local titles across the UK, also figured in the prizes, winning the international print innovation award.

Gary Cullum, director of newsawards, says: “Newsbrands at national and local level remain the powerhouse for news provision in the UK, setting agendas, forcing change, holding those in power to account and keeping politicians on their toes; while at the same time entertaining and informing their audiences.
