Sports editor leaves regional publisher for new lecturing role

Jon PalmerA sports journalist has left a regional publisher for the second time to take on a new role as a journalism lecturer.

Gloucestershire Live sports editor Jon Palmer, left, took up a new role this month with the University of Gloucestershire, lecturing in sports journalism.

Jon started as a trainee sports reporter at the Gloucester Citizen in 2005 and became chief football writer for the Gloucestershire Echo in February 2006.

He left the company for a year in 2014-15 to work as media and communications manager at Cheltenham Town Football Club, returning to the Echo and Citizen as sports editor in September 2015.

During his second spell he helped oversee the launch of countywide website Gloucestershire Live.

Jon will continue working for Gloucestershire Live on a freelance basis, covering Cheltenham Town, about whom he has written three books, and other football clubs in the county.

Other recent job moves in the regional press include the following:

* Bournemouth Echo business and technology editor Darren Slade will now also preside over business coverage at its Newsquest sister daily the Dorest Echo as part of an expanded role.  Poole-born Darren was previously local government correspondent and then chief reporter in Bournemouth.

* A number of staff changes have taken place at Newsquest’s Glasgow-based Herald and Times group. Head of sport Scott Mullen has left to join BBC Sport Scotland and senior broadcasdt journalist team leader, while online sports editor Alasdair Mackenzie has left and is moving to Rome to work as a freelance.  Meanwhile reporter Brian Donnelly has moved to the role of business correspondent.

* Kim Briscoe has been appointed as editor of Archant Norfolk’s South & West weeklies, having previously served as chief reporter at the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News.  Lauren Cope has replaced her in the latter role. Arts correspondent Emma Knights and reporter Gavin Massey have left the EDP, while Joseph Norton has joined the title as a reporter.

* Baylis Media has promoted James Preston to the role of editor of Maidenhead Advertiser and Slough & Windsor Express. James was previously deputy editor at the titles.

* Tom Molloy has joined the Daily Post as a multimedia reporter. He was previously freelancing while also studying for an MA in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University.

* Chris Wilkin has been appointed news editor of the Braintree & Witham Times having previosly been chief reporter at the Clacton & Frinton Gazette Series. James Dawn has replaced him in Clacton.

* Lauren Harte has left the Fermanagh Herald to join the Belfast Telegraph as a news reporter.

* Huddersfield Examiner reporter Joanne Douglas has left the paper.  Joanne was also a former local government reporter at the daily title.

* Dan Splarn, previously a feature writer at The Resident, has joined Archant North London as senior features writer, working across the Ham & High Series, Islington Gazette, and Hackney Gazette.

* Isabel Dobinson has moved from news websites Get Surrey and Get Hampshire to join sister titles Get West London and the Croydon Advertiser as a reporter.

* Sam Snedden has taken on the role of interim head of digital at The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News.

* Chris Lever has been promoted from news editor to deputy editor at the Halifax Courier, Brighouse Echo, Hebden Bridge Times & Todmorden News, Dewsbury and Mirfield Reporter, Spenborough Guardian and Batley & Birstall News.

* Stuart Arnold has left his role as regional reporter at The Northern Echo after 18 years and is now freelancing.

* The Bucks Free Press has appointed Stephanie Wareham as audience and content editor. Stephanie will also continue reporting for the paper.

* Amy Fenton has been promoted to chief reporter at West Cumbria daily The Mail.

* Emma Flanagan has been named social media editor at the Bristol Post after returning from maternity leave.

    So another well-paid college lecturer with a full-time job continues to do freelance work. Great news for the freelances trying to make a living in the Cheltenham area. As for the job prospects of his sports journalism students……
