Former journalist writes book detailing year in the life of his village

A former regional journalist has written a book charting a year in the life of the village he calls home.

Philip Elms has included hundreds of interviews and observations in ‘Roundabout – A Year in the Life of Little Common’, which has already sold 200 copies.

Philip, a former production journalist with the Hastings-based Observer series, has lived in the village for 30 years.

The main part of the book is a journal featuring events from every day in 2017, covering everything from flower shows to family tragedies.

Sections on history of the village, which is on the western outskirts of Bexhill-on-Sea, in East Sussex, and the year in numbers are also included.

Said Philip: “Even people who live here say they had no idea so much went on in Little Common.

“Much has been documented about Little Common’s colourful history from smuggling gangs to coaching inns, but I wanted to write up the here and now, which I knew had never been done before.

“People were so generous with their time and several of the interviews were profoundly moving.”

Philip has now ordered a new batch of the self-published books.
