Daily’s former financial editor dies aged 79 after long illness

Paddy ThompsonA daily newspaper’s former financial editor who also worked as a stockbroker has died aged 79.

Jimmy Thompson, widely known as Paddy, worked as a journalist on Glasgow-based daily The Herald for five years.

Belfast-born Paddy, pictured, had begun his journalism career on the Financial Times, in London, in 1962.

After a spell working in New York, he returned to the United Kingdom, taking on the role with the The Herald from 1965 to 1970.

Paddy left journalism to work in the financial industry in 1970, where he remained until retiring in 1999.

Away from work, he was known for his love of rugby union, and also played cricket and golf.

An obituary in The Herald states: “He will be remembered by all for his generosity, social contribution, his comradery, his sharp mind, his infectious smile and above all how much he valued his friends and family.”

Paddy died on 30 July 2018, at home with his family, peacefully after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife Alison, daughters Heather, Jennifer and Patricia, grandchildren Jeannie and Patrick and sons-in-law David, Peter and Jamie.
