Librarian who worked for regional daily during war dies aged 90

Hazel Jones 1A librarian who worked for a regional daily during the second World War has died aged 90.

Tributes have been paid to Hazel Jones, left, who worked at Wolverhampton-based daily the Express & Star and later spent time working for Trinity Mirror in London.

Last year Hazel marked her 90th birthday by backing the Express & Star’s bid to digitise its archive of around one million photographs.

During her time at its Queen Street offices between 1942 and 194, she stored photographs from the Press Association and Reuters of the then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s wedding day, and pictures from the liberation of the Belsen Nazi concentration camp.

Her niece Linda Green told the E&S: “She suffered a broken leg in September and never really recovered.

“Until her fall she really loved life and lived it to the full.

“I’ve had lots of cards and notes from people I don’t even know. She was always sharp. She enjoyed living at Pendene Court [care home, in Wolverhampton] and being involved in charity activities.

“She helped raise lots of money for local charities over the years. She loved her gardening as well.”
