Giant poppy display on way to daily’s patch after successful campaign

A giant display of poppies is set to be exhibited on a regional daily’s patch thanks to a campaign by the newspaper.

HTFP has previously reported how The Sentinel, Stoke, was calling for the ‘Weeping Window’ display to be brought to Stoke-on-Trent as part of a four-year tour of the UK after an initial snub by organisers.

The ceramic flowers were originally put in place at the Tower of London in 2014 to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The Sentinel sent a readers’ petition, along with a letter signed by 100 influential people on its patch, to organiser 14-18 Now after Stoke-on-Trent was left off the tour despite more than half of the ceramic flowers used in the display being made there.

It has now been announced that Stoke will host the tour at Middleport Pottery for six weeks from 2 August to 16 September next year.

Editor Martin Tideswell said: “Having the poppies here is a huge boost and fitting recognition of the role our city played in creating such an iconic art installation.

“Our city has very strong links with the military and a heritage building like Middleport is the perfect backdrop for the Weeping Window sculpture.

“It’s also close to the Mother Town of the Potteries, not in the city centre, which will please many people.”
