Prison to bring in body scanners after regional daily exposé

A prison is introducing new body scanners after a regional daily exposed drug use and bizarre behaviour at the facility.

HTFP reported last month how the Manchester Evening News published footage of naked drug-fuelled inmates pretending to be fighting dogs at Salford’s Forest Bank Prison.

The MEN splashed on the story after obtaining various videos clips from the jail.

One showed a prisoner, apparently hallucinating, writhing on his cell bed and cowering in fear at the sight of an apple, while laughing inmates mock him.

Another showed two naked prisoners wearing masks are seen on all fours barking like dogs while their ‘owners’, two other inmates, control them with leads.

Since then, the MEN has also uncovered another clip which shows inmates appearing to mock Islam, which has been forwarded to Forest Bank to investigate.

Plans to introduce the body scanners, which check for items including drugs and mobile phones, have now been made public in the newspaper.

A spokeswoman for Forest Bank said: “Prisons are a challenging environment to manage and the safety of staff, prisoners and visitors remains a top priority.

“The introduction of body scanners has been in the planning for some months and we expect them to come into operation within the next six weeks. We will continue to invest in resources such as body scanners to help stop illicit items entering the prison.”
