Daily produces mock 1920s front to mark TV show’s new series

A mock 1920s newspaper front page has been produced as part of a regional daily supplement celebrating a TV programme’s new series.

The Birmingham Mail ran the front as part of a supplement marking the beginning of the third series of period crime drama Peaky Blinders.

The show is based on the exploits of the real-life Peaky Blinders gang, who were active in Birmingham in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The Mail has been working with the BBC ahead of the new series, with the first episode airing tonight after a premiere in Birmingham yesterday.

Editor Marc Reeves said: “Peaky Blinders is a TV phenomenon and the Birmingham Mail has been with it since the start.

“We took the mick out of the mostly appalling ‘Brummie’ accents at the start, but like millions of viewers, we’ve fallen in love with the show and its characters.

“Brummies have taken it to heart too and we’ve been working closely with the BBC in Birmingham to share the excitement of the series three premiere with our readers.

“The supplement was a great idea, and our showbiz reporter Roz Laws had exclusive access to the cast so it’s packed with fantastic stories. Our designer Nick Harries also did a ‘blinding’ job by recreating the look and feel of the Mail back in the era of the original Peaky Blinders.

“We were at the Birmingham premiere tonight, giving out copies of the supplement to fans and live blogging the whole event as the stars arrive.

“The supplement has been a real hit, and we’ve already had enquiries from as far away as Brazil asking how to get a copy.”
