Journalist counts down island’s top 100 sportspeople in new book

guernsey-bookA daily sports editor has written a book counting down the top 100 sportspeople from the island he serves.

Rob Batiste, of the Guernsey Press and Star, is bringing out The Big Book of Guernsey Sport at the end of this month.

The 752-page hard back book is described as “the ultimate celebration of local sport as chronicled in the pages of the Guernsey Press”.

Rob’s top 10 were revealed at a launch event held for the book earlier this month.

Unsurpisingly, former Southampton and England football Matt Le Tissier, who was born and raised on the island, topped the list.

Second is Olympic marathon runner Lee Merrien, while his namesake Alison – multiple world champion bowler – makes up the top-three.

Said Rob: “It was an incredibly difficult task putting together the complete list of 100.

“Nobody will agree with all 100 and I realise there will be lots of ‘I can’t believe he or she isn’t in’ but what the list demonstrates wonderfully is the unbelievable sporting talent this little island has produced over the years.”
