Shock football win prompts special regional daily wrap

A champion-toppling football performance was celebrated with a special front page wrap by a regional daily.

The Bournemouth Echo marked AFC Bournemouth’s victory over current English champions Chelsea in the Premier League with the wraparound, published in yesterday’s edition.

The wrap, pictured below, features an image of the two sides walking out on to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge ground ahead of Saturday evening’s encounter.

Bournemouth, nicknamed the Cherries, triumphed 1-0 in what proved to be the division’s most surprising result of the weekend.

The Cherries are currently experiencing their first ever season in England’s top flight, of which Chelsea finished top last season.

After Bournemouth’s promotion to the Premier League in April, the Echo published a number of special front pages and wraparounds celebrating the team’s success.

In September, it also produced a book on the club’s history.

Deputy editor Neil Meldrum said: “This was already a monumental season in AFC Bournemouth’s history given it’s the club’s first in the top-flight of English football, but we wanted to mark yet another huge moment with a special edition of the paper.

“The supporters were magnificent again at Stamford Bridge, especially given the club’s recent sticky patch, and hopefully today’s paper can remind them in years to come of the day their club beat the Premier League champions in their own back yard.”
