Mercury rising brings good news for curry fans

It might not be the best way to cool off in the current heat wave, but a curry house is offering patrons a discount based on a regional daily office’s rooftop thermometer.

The Khyber Tandoori restaurant, in Leicester, is giving customers a percentage discount matching the temperature recorded on the thermometer at the Leicester Mercury’s St George Street base, in the city.

The mercury rising is good news for food fans after the thermometer, pictured below, hit 38C on Wednesday, which was higher than the official recorded temperature due to the sun shining directly on it.

The offer, which only applies to food and will be taken from the temperature recorded at noon, began yesterday and will last for a week.

Owner Dinesh Raval, 53, who runs the restaurant with brother Ashok, 62, explained to the Mercury: “We’ve not been as busy since the hot weather.

“We have never given discounts on food in our 21-year history, but I thought this would be a nice way of giving something back to our loyal customers.”

When told of the 38C high by the Mercury, he responded: “Ah, well, it’s only for a week, we’ll take the hit.

“It would also be helpful if people coming in for the discount mentioned they had read it in the Leicester Mercury.

“I’m sure it will be mainly our regular customers coming in.”
