Journalism school eyes new base close to BBC headquarters

One of the country’s leading journalism colleges is eyeing a potential move to a new base close to a planned £120m BBC office.

Work has recently begun on a new £120m headquarters for BBC Wales in the centre of Cardiff.

Now Wales Online has reported that Cardiff’s acclaimed School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies is considering a move to a new 30,000 foot office close to the BBC HQ.

The school, currently based in the main Cardiff University campus in Cathays Park, has engaged chartered surveyors Cooke & Arkwright to look at possible options for its future home.

According to the Media Wales report, a number of potential city centre locations for the training school are under consideration.

They include 1 Central Square, a 135,000 foot office scheme due to be completed next year, and 2 Central Square, which is due for completion in 2019 around the same time as the BBC Wales HQ.

Closer proximity to the BBC would provide greater opportunities for students to gain work experience with the public service broadcaster.

In a joint statement Cooke & Arkwright and Cardiff University said: “Cooke & Arkwright have been instructed to work with Cardiff University to consider the long-term home of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

“We are currently working closely together to explore all the possible options and no decisions have been made.”
