Supplement marks football derby which divided patch

A football derby which divided a city led a regional daily to produce a special supplement marking the match.

The Birmingham Mail ran the eight-page pull-out yesterday ahead of last night’s League Cup tie between fierce rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

The game was the first time the clubs had met in more than four years, and resulted in a 1-0 victory for Villa.

In total, the Mail dedicated 13 pages of coverage to the clash in yesterday’s paper, including the supplement, pictured below.

It ran an interview with Alex McLeish, who served as manager of both clubs, as well as pieces by rival supporters expressing their hopes, fears and expectations.

Online, the Mail also ran question and answer sessions via Periscope with sports writers Brian Dick and Gregg Evans.

It also ran ‘Buzzfeed-style’ lists offering 49 ways to know you were a fan of either club.
