Editor turned PR man pens ‘sex and politics’ tale

Graham ColeA former regional press editor turned PR has penned a “racy” novel about a man who makes the transition from journalist to press officer.

But Graham Cole, pictured left, who edited Kent Today and now works as Gravesend Council’s communications manager, insists his protagonist in The Last Punter shares few similarities with himself despite their identical career paths.

The book, described as “sex, scandal, intrigue, politics and death” on its front cover, tells the story of former reporter Gary Clarke, who switches jobs to run the public relations at a local council.

So far, the book has sold more than 100 copies and is available to buy on Amazon, Kindle and over the counter at two Gravesend pubs.

Graham told KentOnline: “Gary Clarke is an immoral person who would be considered quite shrewd but has many emotional flaws.

“I wouldn’t describe myself as having those flaws, he has a far more interesting life than I have.”

However, although some elements of the book do draw on career experiences and conversations with politicians and journalists, Graham said the reaction from those on the council and former colleagues had been overwhelmingly positive.

He added: “I didn’t tell anyone I was going to do it until it was done but the main feeling has been good-humoured.”
