Daily eclipses competition with first print photos of solar phenomenon

A regional daily carried what are thought to be the first photographs of this morning’s solar eclipse in a print newspaper.

The Oldham Evening Chronicle, which still goes to print on the same day, featured a photo of the eclipse on its front page, pictured below.

Photographer Darren Robinson took a series of shots showing the moon travelling across the sun, creating a twilight above the town.

The process started around 8.30am as the moon slowly blocked out the sun.

There were fears that the weather would be too overcast but the clouds cleared to give stunning views of the whole process.

The Chronicle also posted a series of time-lapse photographs online, with its print version htting the streets around noon.

Deputy editor Bob Young said: “The front page highlighted the value that evening newspapers still provide, by giving readers the latest, same-day news.

“Darren is an award-winning photographer and his images really captured this unusual and rare event.

“This was further backed-up by our online activities with time-lapse pictures.

“The Chronicle has proved the value of same-day coverage previously with our election results coverage, and this latest event again highlights these benefits.”

What awful presentation, though. Lots of Newsquest subs were recently axed in the area – well worth snapping a couple up.

Great to get it out on the same day but spectacular?
    For Oldham?
    Definition: spectacular
    /spɛkˈtakjʊlə/
    adjective
    adjective: spectacular
beautiful in a dramatic and eye-catching way.
    “spectacular mountain scenery”
    synonyms: striking, picturesque, eye-catching, breathtaking, arresting, amazing, glorious;
    Yep, none of these…

Could not agree more Bob. “Next day” regional papers are like stale bread and their sales reflect it, however hard the staff work (and they do!). There is also the thrill of same day deadlines for print. Can’t beat it but a lot of kids will never experience it.
A back to evening movement should be started. After all, digital is immediate, so why shouldn’t print be asap!

I like it but I’m intrigued by the ‘Cows stabbed to death’ plug.

I like it too, but as well as mad cows I love the ‘I’m bonkers, your majesty’, and what about the ad: ‘ITS JESUS.COM’ with no contraction apostrophe…

Old-fashioned paper gets old-fashioned ‘scoop’. Fair dos!

Routine eclipse picture as they go. But at least it was same day. I rue the day my evening paper went next day. Looks so tired when stories being stuffed on website. No future for those papers, except as weeklies or puffs for web sites.

Full marks for same-day publication. But where is the Oldham topography? That picture could have been taken almost anywhere in the country. I was once offered a magnificent photo of the moon, complete with glistening sea. But there was nothing to suggest it had been taken in our home patch, so I politely declined to print it.
