Newspapers' iconic clock tower to be transformed

An iconic clock tower at the former headquarters of two sister dailies is set to undergo a hi-tech transformation.

The tower, pictured below, is the last remnant of the now demolished offices of the Yorkshire Evening Post and the Yorkshire Post, at Wellington Street, Leeds.

It is now being reclad and wired up to allow digital advertising displays to be shown on it.

The £250,000 system is due to go live in the next week to 10 days, with Yorkshire Building Society in place as the first advertiser.

The five-acre site has been vacant since the Johnston Press-owned titles moved to the nearby No1 Leeds building on Whitehall Road in 2012.

Plans have been put before Leeds City Council to transform the land into offices, a top class hotel, a residential tower, restaurants, convenience stores, leisure facilities and open spaces.

Specific proposals include three detached office buildings intended as headquarters for companies and a residential tower containing 200 homes.

If all plans get the green light, up to 4,000 people could end up living and working on the site.
