A regional daily editor who recently returned to full-time work after battling throat cancer is to undertaking a charity golf challenge.

Oldham Chronicle managing editor Dave Whaley will attempt to play 72 holes of golf in a single day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Dave, pictured below, was diagnosed with cancer in April 2014 and after radiotherapy failed to clear the tumour on his vocal cords he underwent a partial laryngectomy in January.

During his year-long fight against the disease, Dave wrote a series of articles under the title “Keep Smiling” documenting his progress.

He returned to full-time work in April.

Dave and three friends will begin their challenge by tee off at 5am on Saturday 4 July, at Werneth Golf Club, near Oldham.

Said Dave: “The ‘Keep Smiling’ articles prompted calls from journalists I know all over the country wishing me well.

“I just hope some of them will put their hands in their pockets and donate via our Just Giving page.

“I have been incredibly lucky and the money will go to help others who walk a similar path.”

So far, £170 of Dave’s £500 target has been pledge via the page.

“I just hope people will help us raise as much money as possible,” he added.
