Weekly's backing for new attraction

A weekly is backing a campaign for a new tourist attraction commemorating one of its patch’s most famous sons to be built.

The Morecambe Visitor has offered its patronage to a £50,000 project to install a life-size bronze plaque of TV comedy duo Morecambe and Wise in the seaside resort.

Eric Morecambe, whose real name was John Eric Bartholomew, was born in the town and used it as his stage name.

The Visitor has already successfully raised funds for a statue of the pair, close to where the proposed plaque will stand.

Editor Nicola Adam said: ““Eric Morecambe is an absolute legend for Morecambe and an icon for the town.

“The Visitor was instrumental in raising funds for the Eric Morecambe statue and we are proud to support this project.

“The statue has brought in tourists to Morecambe from all over the world, boosting the town’s economy.

“We believe this additional tribute to Eric and Ernie could be another big draw for Morecambe.”
