Journalists’ jobs at risk in publisher’s restructure

Journalists’ jobs are among those at risk under restructuring plans drawn up by a regional publisher.

Around 30 roles are at risk in DC Thomson’s consumer entertainment division, which includes its magazine titles.

The company says it expects there to be 12 fewer roles at the end of its consultation process in the editorial, graphic design and art departments.

Eight roles within the publisher’s enterprise department, which includes call centre operations, are also at risk, while DC Thomson is also transferring 15 finance positions to Dundee, which are currently based in Aberdeen and Redhill in Surrey.

The company said its newspaper titles, which include The Courier and Sunday Post in Dundee and Aberdeen’s Press & Journal and Evening Express, were not affected by the restructure.

In a statement, DC Thomson said the proposals had been made after an efficiency review in the three departments.

Ellis Watson, the company’s chief executive officer of publishing (newspapers and magazines), said, “Over the past few months, the company has been reviewing the efficiency of our business in three separate areas.

“As a result of this review, a number of roles within the business are affected by a change in location or organisational restructure.

“Nine finance roles in Aberdeen and six finance roles in Redhill will move to Dundee. Eight roles within the company’s enterprise department are at risk of redundancy, because of outsourcing proposals.

“Within our consumer entertainment business, there will be up to twelve fewer roles as we look at the most efficient structure to meet the needs of the competitive marketplace.

“The company will discuss all options with its affected employees individually and we will work with our staff members to ensure the best possible outcome for each individual during this transition period.”

Neil O’Brien, the company’s head of publishing (consumer entertainment), said: “Around 30 roles are at risk in DC Thomson’s consumer entertainment business.

“A proposed restructure means that some editorial, art department and graphic design posts are affected across the company’s magazine titles.

“The company anticipates it will need up to twelve fewer roles as a result and is in consultation with affected staff members.”

Magazine titles published by DC Thomson include The People’s Friend, My Weekly and the Beano comic.
