New university newsroom dedicated to journalist

A well-known national press journalist who started out at a regional daily will open a new university newsroom named in his honour.

Matthew Engel will officially open the newsroom dedicated to him at the University of Northampton today.  It will be used by journalism students there.

He started his career at the Northampton Chronicle and Echo before moving to Reuters then The Guardian and he was editor of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack for 12 years. He currently works for the Financial Times.

Matthew, who was born in Northampton, will also take part in a Q&A session with students at the university where he will talk about his life and work.

Journalism course leader John Mair said: “We are hugely privileged to have Matthew coming. He is a great writer and a wonderful role model for young and aspiring journalists, and the best to come out of Northampton.”
