New general secretary for journalists union

A former local newspaper reported who later went on to the nationals has taken over as general secretary of a journalists’ union.

Nick Townsend is now acting general secretary of the British Association of Journalists pending an election of members next year.

He takes over from the former Mirror reporter Steve Turner, who founded the BAJ 21 years ago, and is now president.

Nick started out on local papers at the now-defunct Tottenham Herald, where he was news editor before moving on to the Daily Mail and Independent on Sunday.
