New editor appointed for Welsh sister weeklies

A new editor has been appointed to lead two sister weeklies in Wales in what she describes as her “dream job.”

Gina Robertson, left, has taken the helm at the Barry & District News and the Penarth Times, after working at fellow Newsquest title the South Wales Argus for more than eight years.

In the course of a 30-year career, Gina has worked on daily and weekly titles around the country, including the Evening Gazette in Teesside, Cumbria’s News & Star and the Wirral Globe.

Originally from Liverpool, Gina has been acting editor at the two weeklies for around three months after former news chief Shira Valek left to work for local MP Stephen Doughty.

She said: “I am just looking forward to getting to grips with it. They are very much community papers so it will be nice to get involved and get to know people. They are really nice areas but very different.”

Gina plans to meet members of the local community in the coming weeks to find out what they want from the papers.

In an story about her appointment, she said: “This is my dream job and I hope readers will feel free to contact me over issues they feel strongly about and want us to get involved in.”
