Journalist hits headlines as football boss answers phone

A sports journalist found himself making the headlines after a football manager answered an inopportune phone call from his wife in the middle of a press conference.

Michael Grant, the chief football correspondent at Scottish daily The Herald, used his mobile phone to record a Celtic FC press conference on Saturday – but the event turned comical when manager Neil Lennon answered two calls from his wife Sharon.

The comedy moment has since been reported on by a number of national newspapers and other media organisations.

As Lennon spoke at the event, the phone on his desk started ringing, which he initially ignored but then answered, saying: “She’s not happy” as Mrs Grant hung up.

She then phoned back again shortly after and Lennon said: “Are you going to stop interrupting my press conference please?”

He then revealed his identity to her, resulting in Mrs Grant hanging up the phone again and leaving journalists in the room roaring with laughter.

Lennon turned to the Herald journalist and saying: “You’re not going out tonight, Michael”.

Following the incident, Michael tweeted: “Wanted: old style tape recorder. For sale: iPhone.”

Lennon then tweeted, ahead of the Dundee United match: “Another tough game tonight…pitch is in good condition and we are all looking forward to it

“Am also looking forward to the press conf afterwards …ahem.”
