Dozens of jobs created in regional daily’s scheme

A regional daily paper helped create more than 85 new jobs in its local area thanks to cash from the Regional Growth Fund.

The Western Morning News teamed up with Plymouth University to boost small businesses and increase employment, and was awarded a £1million grant for the project.

Through the scheme, businesses were given cash grants of between £25,000 and £150,000 to create employment through the delivery of specific projects.

The News was awarded the million-pound grant by the Regional Growth Fund in August 2011, to be used in a programme focusing on small and medium-sized businesses.   It was among seven regional newspapers selected to distribute Regional Growth Fund cash.
