Designer completes 100-mile bike challenge

A senior designer at a regional publisher swapped pages for pedals when he took part in the first Ride London-Surrey 100-mile bike ride.

Dom Castle, who is head of editorial design for Archant Life magazines, took part in the inaugural event on last month which was the brainchild of London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Dom raised £830 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity and managed to complete the course in 5hrs 50mins 58secs, while his son Tom, who used to work at Archant Suffolk, also took part and finished with a time of 5h 26m 57s.

The bike challenge saw more than 16,000 cyclists take to the roads of London and Surrey which were cleared of other traffic for the event.

Dom said: “It was incredible, swinging along the Embankment with thousands of other riders and not a car on the road – surreal really.

“The support was amazing. There were tens of thousands of people clapping and cheering us on in every town and village; people had set up picnics and barbecues in their front gardens to watch us go past.

“Given that their roads were all closed all day because of us, it was a pretty generous response!”

With sponsorship from family, friends and colleagues, Dom managed to easily clear his fundraising target of £750 and he will apply for this to be doubled under the Archant Gold scheme.
