Daily in week-long tribute for iconic footballer’s death

A regional daily newspaper has published a series of features to mark the anniversary of the death of Newcastle’s greatest ever sportsman.

The Newcastle Chronicle has printed five special features to mark 25 years since legendary Newcastle United centre-forward Jackie Milburn died on 9 October, 1988.

The famous number nine remains an iconic figure on Tyneside having scored 200 goals in 395 games for Newcastle United between 1943 and 1957 – a record only broken by Alan Shearer in 2006.

Wor Jackie, as he was affectionately known, was honoured with five days of features documenting his rise to stardom as well as his family life and success as a professional footballer.

Features included an interview with Jackie’s widow Laura, his footballing relatives Jack and Bobby Charlton, and the day Newcastle came to a standstill for his funeral.

Newcastle Chronicle news editor Neil Preston said Jackie remains a revered figure in the North East and the paper wanted to do justice to the town’s most famous number nine.

“We did a poll and readers voted him top in our Greatest Ever Geordie poll last year so we wanted to do something special to mark the anniversary,” he said.

“There are not too many people known by their first name like ‘Wor Jackie’, but he was North East born and bread, he worked down the pit, and was from the era where players travelled to the match on Saturday with the fans.

“Rather than just rehash stuff, we have gone out and got a load of new content and got some lovely stories, his widow Laura got out the old family photo album and showed photos of him at home sweeping the snow off the drive and playing with his children.”

Sports reporter John Gibson also wrote a piece on Jackie’s background, including a tale about him eating pork pies before scoring six second-half goals against the Newcastle United first team during a trial game.

Other tributes included a look at the legacy of Jackie Milburn and a photographic slideshow of his illustrious career.
