Newspapers win free parking for Leap Day

Parking will be free in almost every major town in Cornwall tomorrow thanks to a campaign by three weekly newspapers in the county.

Go To Town! is a joint initiative by the West Briton, Cornish Guardian and Cornishman aimed at boosting Cornwall’s town centres.

As part of the campaign, the three Northcliffe-owned titles negotiated free parking for shoppers on Leap Day, 29 February.

The deal, agreed with Cornwall County Council, will enable shoppers to park for free, using a voucher from any of the three titles, in most Cornish towns.

Alongside the free parking offer, hundreds of businesses have used the papers to offer incentives for people to use their town centres.

In Penzance alone, more than 50 businesses have placed special offers in The Cornishman, ranging from free coffee and pizza to money off furniture, clothing, gifts and wine and a £100 bridal voucher.

Cornishman editor Jacqui Walls said: “Leap Day is a fantastic start to a campaign that has really gathered momentum over the past month.

“The businesses are really behind this idea and we hope all our towns will be buzzing on Wednesday as people take advantage of the free parking and the special offers they have provided.

“This is just the beginning of a campaign that we hope will provide a real boost to our town centres over the next few months.”

The campaign, which was launched earlier this month, aims to increase footfall in the towns by helping to fill empty shops, cleaning up the streets, providing more incentives for people to use to town centres and raising the profile of independent shops.
