Newly qualified reporter to chronicle expedition

A student journalist is to embark on an epic trip which will see him travel across central Asia, Armenia and the Falklands.

Jamie Maddison, 23, graduates from Cornwall College this month where he trained as a reporter on a National Council for the Training of Journalist accredited course.

He is planning the escapades as the start of his freelance career as a journalist, photographer, filmmaker and explorer, documenting his trip along the way.

Said Jamie: “After I finish my course at Cornwall College Camborne I’m pretty much off immediately to Armenia for close to a month to write two articles; one on the country’s deforestation problems and another on Lake Sevan.

“After university I began writing for the climbing magazine Climber and this gave me this unquenchable desire to explore lost and forgotten corners of the world.

“Since acquiring the training at the college I feel I’ve finally now got the skills to document and investigate my adventures in a way that is sellable to newspapers and magazines.”

The first of Jamie’s missions will be in early February to the Caucasian country of Armenia where he’s writing an investigative article about the country’s deforestation problems.

In 2013, along with his colleague Matthew Traver, Jamie is aiming to recreate the journey of British adventurer Charles Howard-Bury to Central Asia a century after he first set off. Prior to this, he will also report from Armenia in February.

Added Jamie: “Of course learning shorthand has been a great asset, but one of the most important things I have taken away from the fast-track course is the message not to be complacent, not to just sit behind a desk, but to actually get out there to talk and meet people.

“In my opinion that’s the only way to find the most interesting stories.”
