Journalist couple recall Olympics volunteer stints

A regional press couple who helped to manage the international media as London 2012 volunteers have written about their experiences.

Archant Norfolk health correspondent Kim Briscoe and husband David Powles, who is a digital publisher, volunteered as Games Makers for two weeks at the Olympics.

Kim worked in the basketball arena, helping to manage the “mixed zone” where the world’s journalists interview players and coaches straight after a match, as well as helping to stage the media conference after each game.

And David worked at the Olympic Stadium helping to manage the world’s photographers in a role which allowed him to see Usain Bolt secure gold in the 100m final.

Kim and David are pictured at the Olympic Park.

Writing about the experience, Kim said: “I count myself lucky to be one of the 70,000 Games Makers chosen from the 240,000 who applied, and even luckier to be in a position where I got to watch lots of live sport.

“Only being needed right at the end of the games, we were free to take up any empty seats in the press tribunes and watch the USA’s ‘dream team’ slam dunk their way past team after team, and watch the semi-finals and finals of the handball competition when it moved to our venue.

“My team also had roles which meant I spent time escorting players and coaches to their changing rooms, and then on to the media conference, giving me a chance to crane my neck and speak to some of the very tall stars of the game.

“I now know far more about basketball and handball then I ever did before, but what I will treasure most is being a part of such an uplifting and historic event.

“From Londoners who stopped me on the street or chatted to me on the Tube, to the boundless enthusiasm and cheer of my fellow volunteers and the spectators, I had a front row seat to experience a wealth of kindness, generosity and spirit that I had never seen before on such a scale.”

David has also written two blogs about his experiences, which can be viewed here and here.
