Monthly paper ceases publication after 14 years

A free, monthly newspaper which has been published for 14 years is understood to have ceased publication.

Local News Glasgow published its last edition in December before a decision was taken to close it because of difficulties generating enough advertising revenue.

The paper was founded in 1997 as Local News for Southsiders to create a public forum where people could discuss local issues and concerns.

Ten years later, new title Local News for Westenders was launched to fill a gap in the market on that side of the city and its distribution was further extended before the two papers merged in August 2009 to create Local News Glasgow.

The title, produced by YAM Publications, was written by a small team of freelance journalists led by owner/editor Grace Franklin, who took the difficult decision to close it.

She told allmediascotland.com: “If I had been a hard-nosed business person, I would have wrapped it up a long time ago. Towards the end, it was the love of it, rather than money, that kept it going.”
