Journalism student wins European reporting prize

A UK journalism student has beaten off competition from across Europe to be named as one of three winners of an award for young reporters.

Katie Davies, who is in the first year of a Journalism and Russian degree at the University of Sheffield, has won the best written article prize in the Young Reporters Against Poverty contest and has won a press trip to Tanzania later this year.

She won the award for an article headlined “I wish I had AIDS and not diabetes”, highlighting how the latter disease is relatively forgotten in terms of development aid.

Katie, who comes from Leicestershire, wrote her winning article after she was among 33 finalists chosen to attend and report on the European Development Days event in Brussels last month.

Judges said her article had a fantastic headline which caught readers’ attention.

They added it was “excellent presentation of a problem unknown by many of us” with a good mix of quotes and fact.

The contest, which had around 200 entrants, was organised by the European Journalism Centre with financial support from the European Commission and the other two overall winners were Chiara Zappalà from Italy and Alba Málaga Homs from Spain.
