Wantaway journalists to get live careers advice

Journalists looking for careers outside the industry could benefit from a live Q&A session on the Guardian’s website today.

The careers section of the newspaper is running a discussion this afternoon called ‘What else can a journalist do?’ to provide guidance on how to use journalistic skills in other ways.

A panel of media experts and former journalists will offer advice for those who have graduated from journalism degrees and are searching for work or those who have left jobs in newspapers.

The panel includes Sue Heseltine, head of the undergraduate journalism programme at Birmingham City University, and Mark Wilkinson, a senior media officer for Westminster Council who used to work as assistant news editor at The Times.

Kerry Eustice from the Guardian’s careers section said: “With more journalism students graduating this year than there are jobs in the entire industry and many media outlets cutting tens and hundreds of jobs, we look at how else you can use your skills.”

The forum takes place from 1-4pm and to take part, visit careers.guardian.co.uk.

I wonder if ‘working for the Guardian’ was one of the suggestions as a career option? Or is that restricted to London-based Oxbridge graduates with no experience and a healthy bank balance?
