'State of nation' debate to look at Welsh media

A two-day ‘state of the nation’ debate on the media and arts in Wales is starting today.

The annual event is being staged under the banner of Cyfrwng, the Media Wales Journal and website which aims to bring Welsh academic and industry voices together.

Among the topics being debated are:

  • Journalism: is there any real depth in online papers?
  • How is Welsh visual art represented in the press and media in Wales and beyond?
  • Technology: a chance for new voices?
  • How do Welsh voices resound in virtual space?
  • New media, new voices? The Dawn of online Welsh.
  • The conference will kick off with a keynote address by Iona Jones, chief executive S4C.

The Cyfrwng (medium) project is to provide a forum for the presentation of research and scholarly discussion concerning the media in Wales including film, TV, new media, radio and journalism.

Speakers include Marc Webber, media consultant and former editor of The Sun online, Dr Viandra Mistry from the University of Glamorgan, Iwan Bala from Trinity University College in Carmarthen and Stephen Haggard from TV production company Tinopolis.

The conference runs today and tomorrow at Trinity University College.
