Regional editor raises £1,700 in wife’s memory

A regional daily editor has raised more than £1,700 for a cancer charity after completing a 10-mile run in his wife’s memory.

Peter Waters, from the Eastern Daily Press, took part in the Great South Run to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support following the death of his wife Tracy in May.

He completed the course at Tracy’s birthplace of Portsmouth in one hour 22 minutes with her brother Neal and will ask for his fundraising total to be doubled under the Archant Gold scheme.

Tracy, who previously worked for Archant in subscription marketing and on the group’s French magazines until 2004, died of cancer at home in Norfolk at the age of 43, after being diagnosed just seven weeks before.

  • Peter said: “I thought about her all the way round and a few tears were shed. The run takes in Southsea, the harbour and the historic Naval Dockyard – places she loved taking me round.

“Everyone has been so kind and generous. Not just friends, family and work colleagues but even some people who don’t know me but wanted to give to such a worthy cause.

“The palliative care Tracy received after her diagnosis was superb, and it was a great comfort that she passed away peacefully, without pain or discomfort, in her sleep, in her bed, at home.

“Running for Macmillan is the least I can do to say thanks to all the wonderful health workers who helped Tracy.”

He added he was grateful to everyone in the journalistic community who had sponsored him, including former colleagues from his time in Northampton and Peterborough who he’d lost contact with.
