Journalists' union gives own magazine a facelift

The official magazine of the National Union of Journalists has undergone its first revamp since switching from newspaper to magazine 17 years ago.

It is also the first major changes brought in by new editor Christine Buckley, who was elected into the role last November.

She said: “Working with a new design house Surgerycreations we’ve sought to make the magazine more modern, attractive, informative and engaging.

“At this crucial time for journalism I hope that the ‘new look’ magazine reaches out to as many of our members as possible.

“We’re keen that the publication produced for the journalists’ union is of the highest standard, since our audience of media professionals expects a professional magazine.

“I’ve sought to make the new magazine reflective of the diverse, active union that the NUJ is, and I intend that it should echo the voices of our members from across the union.”

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear added: “Congratulations to Christine on producing a magazine for all our members of which the union should be rightly proud.

“The Journalist promotes and reflects the union’s work and the issues that affect journalists as widely as possible and is an excellent shop-window for the union’s campaigns to stand up for journalists and journalism.”

That’s pretty. Hope it looks like that all the way through

Why oh whay di they have to take money out of the Union and give it to an Agency to redesign the publication.
Surely the editor has enough experience to actually perform the task herself?
If not, why is she in the job in the first place?

Union man – you beat me to it. There are a lot of great design subs on the dole. Beggers belief.

Deffo an own goal by the editor.
Shocking decision – good for the company who won the contract, mind.
Was it tendered correctly?
I bleeding hope so

Wait ’til you see the star letter from the Practice Editor of Nursing Times. An ideal opportunity to explain the realities of earning a living to someone who clearly has no idea.

Yep, very nice. Modular, break-out quotes, ragged text, use of white space, drop cap intros, clear signposting, it’s all there. I personally know a dozen or so unemployed designers/subs who could have produced it to this standard.

I did work experience on this mag 13 years ago, with then editor Tim Gopsill – lovely bloke who’d go out of his way to help a young journalist try to start a career.
