Journalist to take on charity ride in mum's memory

A regional press journalist will attempt to undertake a mammoth 1,000-mile motorbike ride across the British Isles in memory of his mum.

Richard Maynard, production editor at monthly publication Newbury Business Today, and his wife Clare will take on the charity challenge next month, which will see them ride around the five countries of the British Isles in just four days.

The couple decided to undertake the motorcycle ride for charity Beating Bowel Cancer after the death of Richard’s mum Kath last November, after an 11-year battle with the disease.

And so far the challenge, dubbed ‘Bikers for Beating Bowel Cancer’ has raised more than £1,100.

Richard said: “My mother was a great supporter of Beating Bowel Cancer, and organised several fundraising events after her own diagnosis.

“We thought that it would be nice to carry on that fundraising work and also raise awareness about bowel cancer and the great work that Beating Bowel Cancer does for patients.”

They will set off on their motorbikes from Newbury on 10 September, travelling to the Welsh port of Fishguard, where they will journey to Rosslare in the Republic of Ireland.

The pair will then ride up to Northern Ireland and take the ferry to Stranraer in Scotland before the final two days will be spent travelling to the offices of Beating Bowel Cancer in London.
