Former editor bows out after 43 years in papers

Quentin Gray

A long-standing journalist who was previously editor of two weekly titles has taken voluntary redundancy from a regional daily, 43 years to the month after starting in the industry.

Quentin Gray, 62, is one of the latest sub-editors to leave the Johnston Press-owned Yorkshire Post following the introduction of the Atex content management system.

He has worked for the title since 1985, spending time as business and farming sub-editor before latterly working wholly on news production.

Quentin trained as a journalist on the now defunct Selby Gazette and Herald and on the Yorkshire Evening Press, now York’s The Press, before moving to be the editor/manager of the Holme Valley Express and Huddersfield District Chronicle.

He said: “I started off selling newspapers with my father when I was eight or nine years old and I have gone on to 62.

“I have been very fortunate in having very different jobs in the industry starting off as a trainee. I thoroughly enjoyed working as an editor and then enjoyed working on the Yorkshire Post.”

Quentin, whose father was a wholesale newsagent, attended two-month block release courses at Sheffield Polytechnic in 1968 and then Richmond College in Sheffield while working in his home city of York.

He left the York title in 1975 to become the editor/manager of the two paid-for weekly newspapers in Last of the Summer Wine country.

During his time there, Quentin launched two other titles – the paid-for Colne Valley Chronicle and the free Huddersfield Chronicle.

After ten years at Huddersfield District Newspapers, he was made redundant when the titles were taken over by the then family-owned Huddersfield Daily Examiner company.

He has been an NUJ member since his first month as a journalist, holding various roles in the union, and is now a life member of the Leeds branch.

Any former colleagues who would like to make contact with him for possible reunions can email [email protected].
