Editor who forecast papers' demise launches new title

A former web editor who predicted the death of two major Scottish newspapers by 2013 is launching a new title himself.

Stewart Kirkpatrick, who spent seven years as editor of Scotsman.com before leaving in 2007, has revealed that his new, so far nameless newspaper, will be up and running before the end of the month, along with a companion website.

But at the end of 2008 he was quoted as saying that his former employer, along with Glasgow daily The Herald, would be gone in five years time if they didn’t change their business models.

He told HTFP: “My opinion has not changed in the meantime. I am not launching an old-fashioned newspaper, what we’re launching is a title designed to draw in the changing market of news.

“What that means is we’re going to be web first but won’t be trying to cover everything.

“We will have a site that breaks down into different areas, for example politics and health, to cover niche areas with informed analysis.”

Stewart added that advertising would be one of the revenue streams for the new title and he would not be leaving his job with content marketing company w00tonomy.com.

The paper will not have a regular printing schedule, such as daily or weekly, but will instead be used in what Stewart called “innovative, unexpected ways.”

“What we are trying to be in innovative in the way we approach print,” he added.

No regular printing schedule? That’ll be fun for the production team!
