College launches new multimedia journalism degree

A new multimedia journalism course has been launched by a South Coast university in a bid to give students modern newsroom skills.

The three-year BA Hons undergraduate course at Southampton Solent University will start for the first time in September – with all the places already taken.

The course description says it offers a blend of vocational training and academic enquiry to enable students to work in multimedia journalism.

It says: “The degree concentrates on the core skills required to succeed as a journalist in today’s environment.

“The programme of learning was created with input from relevant industry sources to ensure it offers the skills most relevant and in demand by journalism employers.

“Taught by industry experienced lecturers, students will use up-to-date professional equipment for print, online and audio/video productions and will work in a newsroom environment, producing material to deadline.”

A spokeswoman for the university said applications to start the degree this year had closed because the course was already full.

She said it was not accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists at present but course leaders hoped it would become so in future.

Students attending will benefit from facilities which include two dedicated newsrooms, two television studios with control room, digital video editing suites and four radio studios.

The only thing currently missing from this course is the only thing that really matters to many employers – the NCTJ certficate – most of the students on this course will find they have to pay for an NCTJ qualification once they’ve finished their degree to stand any chance of getting a job.

Too many of these poor Polys are offering journo qualies to unfortunate students who are then entering a job marketplace which demands something else. I bet they don’t do shorthand and if they do is it to 100 words pm? I know the Nctj has issues but how hard is it to get accredited and if you arent that is surely saying something. One to avoid methinks.
