Classic newspaper bills inspire quirky exhibition

‘Pony set for Britain’s Got Talent’ and ‘Giant crabs invade the Fens.’

These are just two examples of classic Eastern Daily Press newspaper bills that have captured the interest of the Norfolk community in recent times.

And now the appeal of the simple, short description of the day’s headlines has been showcased in a special exhibition in King’s Lynn.

The pen portrait of Norfolk was arranged by artist Lyndall Phelps who collected EDP bill posters and rearranged the words into alphabetical order.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Norfolk was the most frequently occurring word of the 806 used for the project.

Peter Hannam, Archant Norfolk Senior Content Editor, said the exhibition had been further proof of the importance of the newspaper bill – even in the digital age.

He said: “We were obviously happy to help Lyndall and support a local event like this. It was a nice and quirky exhibition but it also shows the continued importance of newspaper bills.

“We have had some cracking and imaginative bills in the past and this was a quirky reflection of that.”

The work was on show at the Lynn Arts Centre as part of an international exhibition.

Ms Phelps said: “I’ve always been interested in these bills. I love the idea of what’s being heralded in today’s headlines is forgotten about tomorrow when something else will be news.

“They’re arranged alphabetically because I wanted to break up the stories so people could make their own associations.”
