Annual photography competition opens for entries

The annual Digital Camera Photographer of the Year prize is now open for entries.

There are ten different award categories: wildlife, Britain inspired, joy, adrenaline, documentary, fashion, landscapes, portraits, travel and creative license.

Top prize is £10,000 and Martin Keene, group picture editor from PA Photos, is among the judges.

Pete Murray, president of the National Union of Journalists, is planning a three-day cycle in July through the First World War battlefields of the Somme and Flanders.

He is hoping to raise £1,600 for the Mines Advisory Group landmine clearance organisation – donations can be made at JustGiving.com/Peter-Murray.

The inaugural Poole Literary Festival, which runs from 29 to 31 October, has launched a prize for new media writing.

Entrants are asked to compose an interactive narrative or poem, designed specifically for delivery online or via mobile phone.

The creators of the winning entries will win £250, an Apple iPad and be advised by digital publishing specialist Creative Content on getting their winning ideas published.

Shortlisted work will be exhibited at Poole Literary Festival and the winner revealed on the festival’s final day.

Rookie journalists can now apply for this year’s BBC Blast Reporter scheme.

Entrants do not need to be trained journalists and the placement will last for eight weeks.

Successful applicants will create things for BBC Introducing shows around the UK.
